Food Shelves

Your local food shelf is on the front line in fighting poverty and hunger in your community.  With the economies of the world in trouble we need to support these grassroots organizations in there effort to help the poor and hungry in our communities.  We are listing food shelves on this page in an effort to help them tell what they do and hopefully find more donors so they can continue to help the poor of your community. Food shelves are looking for donations of food, but they can sometimes benefit more from donations of money because they can purchase food at a discount, and many times they qualify for matching grants where a dollar can be worth up to $60 for your local food shelf.

The Hibbing Food Shelf  has been in operation for about 40 years. The first area food bank was in Hibbing at the old creamery. It is now in Duluth where it is known as the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank.  The current Hibbing food shelf is at 1910 1st Ave. Hibbing, MN 55746.  Our mailing address is:

Hibbing Food Shelf
PO Box 347
Hibbing, MN 55746

Carol Voss, Executive Director of the Hibbing Food Shelf can be reached at 262-1729 or 262-3905. Food Shelf hours are: Monday 9:00-1:00pm Tuesday and Wednesday 1:00-4:00pm.  We serve the area around Hibbing MN.

Absolute Poverty
Absolute Poverty is a condition characterised by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education and information. It depends not only on income but also on access to services.  (According to a UN declaration from Copenhagen in 1995. Info in this section on absolute poverty from Wikipedia)

World Poverty

In developing countries, poor people spend up to 80 % of their disposable income on food.  There is no buffer to modify their food costs. Those who always lived on the edge of starvation have been tipped over that edge by spiraling prices. Economic theory known as  Engel’s Law notes that the proportion of a nation’s income spent on food is a good measure of the nation’s welfare.

This is part of an article from the July issue of Spotlight on Orphans newsletter.

Poverty in the US
The official poverty rate in the US was 12.3% for 2006. (The last year stats available for.)

The US is now in a resession and the poverty rate is probably much worse now.
